About Scaffolding > Legal Requirements

Bad scaffolding costs lives, properties and money, making legal compliance an essential for any professional.

Scaffolding plays an essential role in construction and maintenance that lives depend on every day; from tradesmen building at height to homeowners losing a wall or members of the public simply passing by, scaffolding is something you need to be able to rely on and as such is subject to many regulations and guidelines.

Scaffolding Licences
Any scaffolding erected on public roads or pavements requires a licence from the relevant local authority; we can help you ensure you meet expectations and requirements for application.

Safety
Covered in more detail on our safety page; a swathe of health and safety recommendations and legislation states exacting standards for scaffolding systems and erection; from “common sense” requirements like erecting on a level and stable surface or avoiding power lines to the specification of scaffold materials or the requirement for regular inspections. Our health and safety policy ensures we stay on top of the latest legislation and comply to the letter; the safety of the public, your team, our team and the property itself are always paramount.

British Standards
Demanding quality standards in the materials we use, BS2482 is of particular importance detailing the thickness and specification of scaffolding boards which have to bear a variety of loads, and BS EN 12811-1 has some relevance when used alongside the National Access and Scaffolding Confederations TG20 guidelines or the older BS5973 standard. We only use equipment meeting standards and can offer full support in calculating load weights and design heavy load bearing structures for plant machinery or other exceptional requirements.

Building Regulations
Relating primarily to the building regulations can vary from what the property is allowed to be used for to the quality of materials or specific building methods. Professionally erected scaffolding is an essential for almost any kind of significant sized build.

Planning Permission
If your project needs scaffolding, it almost certainly needs planning permission as well, don’t forget to clear everything long before you hire us!

Always ensure legal compliance; we’re more than happy to help our clients by advising on any of these matters and helping you meet required standards and expectations. We also guarantee all our clients that in any area that legislation requires compliance from the scaffolding company, we always meet or excel guidelines.
